Sumeru
and
the Mustard Seed

An Autonomous Audiovisual Installation

One grain, one world;
one pulse, one eternal recurrence.

The installation is inspired by ancient East Asian philosophies and early mythological traditions. It draws on the principle of 须弥芥子, the mustard seed containing Mount Sumeru, and the concept of eternal recurrence. One grain contains a world, and one pulse reflects an eternal cycle.

The piece functions as a self-sufficient microcosm, following its own internal rhythm independent of observers. Light and sound move through phases of flowing activity and quiet return.

The music acts as a temporal pulse, guiding subtle rhythms within the microcosm. It operates without preference or judgment, and its continuous cycles embody a state of peaceful equilibrium.

In a time of uncertainty, it may offer a quiet moment, a small presence undisturbed by external demands and anchored within itself.

Sound Design: WANG Ziyu ↗

The soundscape combines acoustic and electronic elements. Its structure is based on the interval ratios 3:2 and 4:3, corresponding to the perfect fifth and perfect fourth. These proportions form a cyclical relationship that symbolizes recurrence.

Layered tones and a shimmering texture create a sense of movement and suspension, allowing the sound to expand and contract over time. The music functions as the temporal framework of the installation, shaping the rhythmic unfolding of light and activity.

Cycles of sound and light merge with the porcelain to form a unified system. They embody a living rhythm and autonomous recurrence, maintaining a delicate balance where human attention is neither required nor imposed.
